How a Submersible Well Works

According to the NGWA (National Ground Water Association), over 34 million American residents receive water from wells.

Well water is especially common in rural areas, and you can find water pumps installed in residential, commercial, or industrial locations.

Is there a well on your property?

If so, do you know how to care for it?

To better understand how to service your well you first need to know how a well works.

One of the most common types of wells is a submersible well.

Check out how a submersible well pump works.

How a Well Works

A well is a hole dug or drilled into the ground which allows access to the water in an aquifer. Water will be sent to the surface, normally by means of a pump and piping, but sometimes by more primitive means. The water is then usable for a variety of things, including drinking if it’s clean.

Wells have been around for thousands of years, but only in the last few centuries has the technology advanced beyond the hand-dug versions.

Today, we have the submersible well.

What is a Submersible Well?

A submersible well is a well that functions by means of a submersible pump.

There are different kinds of pumps used in water wells today, but there is one main difference between a submersible pump and other pumps. Submersible pumps push water to the surface in contrast to a jet pump which would suction, or suck, the water to the surface.

This means a submersible pump is far below the surface near the water source while a suctioning pump is at the surface.

Submersible pumps will push water from the source below the surface into a storage tank. Plumbing within a home or other type of building would connect to this storage tank and allow residents or workers to have free-flowing water for their use.

Submersible pumps are usable in shallow or deep wells, are long-lasting, and are more efficient than their jet pump counterparts.

Since the submersible pump is far underground, it can be difficult to address any concerns with repairs. Submersible wells will run for decades, but at some point, you may notice certain issues which may mean you need a water well pump service.

If you think you need your well checked out, it is best to contact a professional that others trust.
